SUMMARY:Lab Skills Course: Microbiology Essentials
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Micro-verse!\nMicrobes play a major role in our everyday lives\, from fermented foods to industrial applications to our own microbiomes. In this four-week course\, you will learn how to safely handle microbes in the laboratory\, isolate a pure bacterial culture from a fermented food\, and begin to characterize your bacterium with various techniques. We will also explore how microbes are used as tools in food production\, the healthcare industry\, and synthetic biology. All ages 12+ are welcome\, and no scientific experience is required. \nSessions will be held every Thursday from September 5 until September 26\, 6:30 to 8:30 pm. \n\nSKILLS GAINED:\n\n\nSafely handle bacterial cultures in the laboratory \n\n\nMaintain a sterile environment for manipulating microbes \n\n\nIsolate pure bacterial strains from a mixed culture \n\n\nUse a light microscope to visualize bacterial cells \n\n\nCharacterize bacteria by cell shape\, Gram staining\, and behavior on selective\nand differential growth media \n\n\nDiscuss broader applications of microbiology \n\n\nRegister today!
