SUMMARY:Value in Cancer Care Summit 2023
DESCRIPTION:HICOR’s (Hutchinson Institute for Cancer Outcomes Research) Value in Cancer Care Summit is a full day conference for individuals from across the healthcare spectrum to convene and collaborate on ways to improve the quality and value of cancer care in the region. The 8th Value in Cancer Care Summit will bring together providers\, patients and caregivers\, patient advocates\, payers\, health system representatives and researchers to discuss the theme of Achieving Quality Cancer Care In 2023 And Beyond. Over the course of the day participants will: \n\nLearn from experts about national trends and opportunities in performance measurement\nShare experiences and challenges in cancer care delivery\nLearn best practices and strategies from other colleagues in the state to improve quality of care\n\nCollaboration is a key factor in improving healthcare for all. The goal for the Summit has always been to convene and collaborate around a shared vision of high-quality cancer care. After several years of foregoing gatherings\, we hope that the 2023 Summit also provides time to reconnect with colleagues and community members.

SUMMARY:yEvo Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This teacher workshop focuses on introducing educators to the innovative concept of yEVO\, an experimental evolution project utilizing vibrant pigmented strains of yeast\, S. cerevisiae\, developed at the Dunham Lab at UW. \nThe workshop will equip teachers with the knowledge and tools to engage their students in a competition experiment. Students will cultivate yeast with different colors in a drug-free medium before subjecting them to competition in media containing the antifungal drug Azole. Through this hands-on experience\, students can determine which yeast strains are best adapted to the antifungal environment by analyzing the color ratios on agar plates after a few days of growth. \nMore info about the activity can be found on our curriculum page.

SUMMARY:Science in Medicine New Investigator Lecture with Azadeh Yazdan\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Science in Medicine New Investigator Lecture\nAzadeh Yazdan\, PhD\nWashington Research Foundation Innovation Associate Professor of Neuroengineering\nDepartments of Bioengineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering \nEngineering Cortical Plasticity in Primate Brain \nAbstract\nThe brain shows marked plasticity across a variety of learning and memory tasks as well as during recovery after injury. Many have proposed to leverage this innate plasticity using brain stimulation to treat neural disorders. Implementing such treatments requires advanced engineering tools and a thorough understanding of how stimulation-induced plasticity drives changes in network dynamics and connectivity at a large scale and across multiple brain areas. In this talk\, I will present my lab’s efforts to investigate targeted stimulation of primate cortex to drive cortical plasticity towards functional recovery. We have developed large-scale interfaces consisting of state-of-the-art electrophysiology and optogenetics to simultaneously record and manipulate activity from about 5 cm2 of cortex in awake behaving macaques. Using this interface\, for the first time\, we have shown the feasibility of inducing targeted changes in sensorimotor networks using optogenetics. Furthermore\, we have incorporated the capability of producing ischemic lesions in the same interface enabling us to stimulate the cortex around the site of injury and monitor functional recovery via changes in blood flow\, neurophysiology\, and behavior. Currently we are using these technologies towards developing therapeutic interventions for neurological disorders such as stroke. \nBiography\nAzadeh Yazdan-Shahmorad joined University of Washington fall of 2017 as the Washington Research Foundation Innovation Assistant Professor of Neuroengineering in the departments of bioengineering and electrical engineering.  She has developed new tools and techniques for implementing optogenetics in non-human primates (NHPs) and rats\, and has used these tools to induce and study targeted plasticity in sensorimotor connections in NHPs. Her long-term goal is to use neural technologies to develop stimulation-based therapies to help restore function and mobility in people with neurological disorders such as stroke. Dr. Yazdan is the recipient of the 2014 IEEE Brain Grand Challenges Young Investigator Award\, and the 2018 Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation Engineering Research Career Development Award and the 2022 American Heart Association Career Development Award. Her research in targeted sensorimotor plasticity was selected as a Hot Topic of 2016 by the Society for Neuroscience. She is also currently a Weill Neurohub Investigator\, a program aimed to foster cross-campus\, interdisciplinary teams of researchers to explore\, create\, and test bold new concepts and technologies for treating neurological and psychiatric diseases. Dr. Yazdan has recently received an Excellence in Mentorship Award from the University of Washington Bioengineering Department as well as the Junior Faculty Award from the University of Washington College of Engineering.

SUMMARY:SEP School Year Workshop: Elephants & Cancer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this SEP School-year Workshop that will explore the new Elephants & Cancer lesson sequence. Elephants are the largest land mammals\, with huge bodies that are made up of exponentially more cells than smaller organisms – cells that could mutate over their long lifespan. And yet\, elephants rarely get cancer. This is thought to be due in part to their extra TP53 tumor suppressor genes\, which code for the p53 protein. Through a comparison of elephants\, humans\, and four other organisms\, students learn why elephants’ genetic makeup makes them less susceptible to cancer.

SUMMARY:SEP School Year Workshop: Frontiers Intro to Cancer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for SEP’s School Year Workshop on our Intro to Cancer storyline unit which was designated a quality example of NGSS design in March 2023 by NextGenScience Peer Review Panel. This is a cancer unit\, intended for high school biology classes\, focused on cell growth\, cell cycle\, and mutations. Over ten lessons\, students investigate the case of Hina Marsey\, an eleven-year old girl\, who is diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. As the unit unfolds\, students develop conceptual models on cell growth\, cancer\, and treatments for leukemia. The unit builds toward a wet lab in which students conduct a gel electrophoresis lab to understand what it means to look for a “match” for transplantation.
