In an effort to understand this process\, researchers have focused on characterizing the signaling proteins that govern the regulation of the cell cycle. Specific cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) and their activating cyclin subunits are desirable therapeutic targets because they regulate a cell’s transition through different phases and checkpoints in the cycle\, providing opportunities to block dysregulated cell division and therefore block tumor growth. In recent years\, researchers have seen success with FDA-approved treatments that target CDK4/6 at the G1/S checkpoint of the cell cycle in estrogen receptor-positive and HER2-negative breast cancers. Many clinical trials are ongoing\, not only to test new drugs\, but also to examine the effects of combinatorial therapies on various cancer types. In their presentations\, our speakers will discuss the intricate interactions between key cell-cycle proteins and how therapeutic interventions can target their activity to fight common cancers. \nDuring the webinar viewers will: \n\nHear about exciting advancements in understanding how CDKs regulate cell cycle control\nDiscover how new CDK inhibitors can be used in combination with other therapeutics to target cancer\nLearn about similarities and differences in critical cell cycle signaling pathways in different cancer types\nHave the opportunity to ask questions during the live broadcast.

He now leads Research IT strategy for UW Medicine and is leading efforts to support and build clinical research informatic platforms as its first Chief Research Information Officer (CRIO) and as a professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education at the University of Washington.  He also leads biomedical informatics for the Institute of Translational Health Sciences at the University of Washington. He is involved in a number of other NIH programs including the NIDDK Kidney Precision Medicine Project. Additionally\, he has a strong interests in leveraging the community of scientists to collaboratively solve difficult problems in biomedical research through open challenges and has participated in several as an organizer\, assessor\, predictor and advisor. Professor Mooney has won several awards and accolades for his work. While at UCSF\, he won the annual Frank M. Goyan Award for research in physical chemistry. He was part of the team that won the $150k Grand Prize in the Garage.com PlanEDU Business Plan Competition in 2000 and his team was featured on CNN and in BusinessWeek.  In 1997\, he received his BS with Distinction in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He then received a PhD in 2001 at the University of California in San Francisco\, and then an American Cancer Society John Peter Hoffman Fellowship at Stanford University.

This serves to highlight the many important advances made by trainees to our field\, and to honor the memory and contributions of Dr. Ben Barres\, who advanced the field not only with his seminal discoveries but also by his tireless and selfless mentoring of and advocacy for junior scientists. \nAs usual at Cold Spring Harbor meetings\, abstracts of both poster and platform sessions will be published in an abstract book. The abstracts should focus on new and unpublished data. The organizers will select abstracts for oral or poster presentations. The status (talk/poster) of abstracts will be posted on our web site as soon as decisions have been made. We have applied for funds from government and industry to partially support graduate students and postdocs. \nWe have funds to provide partial scholarships for individuals who are US citizens/permanent residents from minority groups under-represented in the life sciences. Please provide justification in writing to Catie Carr and state your financial needs. For this reason\, abstracts from accomplished junior and senior investigators are warmly invited. \nOf particular note for trainees\, we will continue the tradition started in 2019 of selecting one graduate student and one postdoctoral scholar to receive the Ben Barres Trainee Award\, and to deliver a longer talk during the meeting. This serves to highlight the many important advances made by trainees to our field\, and to honor the memory and contributions of Dr. Ben Barres\, who advanced the field not only with his seminal discoveries but also by his tireless and selfless mentoring of and advocacy for junior scientists. \nAs usual at Cold Spring Harbor meetings\, abstracts of both poster and platform sessions will be published in an abstract book. The abstracts should focus on new and unpublished data. The organizers will select abstracts for oral or poster presentations. The status (talk/poster) of abstracts will be posted on our web site as soon as decisions have been made. We have applied for funds from government and industry to partially support graduate students and postdocs. \nWe have funds to provide partial scholarships for individuals who are US citizens/permanent residents from minority groups under-represented in the life sciences.
