SUMMARY:Coronavirus Virtual Event Series
DESCRIPTION:A novel coronavirus emerged in China in late 2019; it has been officially named by the World Health Organization (WHO) as COVID-19. LabRoots will be working to educate the community about this pathogen in an ongoing series of virtual events. \nThe First\, Second\, and Third Events of our Coronavirus Virtual Event Series were a great success! It is now available for on-demand viewing. Our next set of presentations will go live on December 3rd. \nJune 17th Keynote Speaker: Stephen S. Morse\, PhD\, FAAM\, F.A.C.E. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis virus is a member of the coronavirus family and is zoonotic\, or transmissible from animals to humans\, and is thought to have originated in bats like other coronaviruses. Researchers are working to learn more about how this virus made the jump from animals to humans\, probably through an intermediate species. \nThe COVID-19 virus has already infected tens of thousands of people worldwide. In China\, hundreds have been killed\, leading the World Health Organization to declare an international health emergency\, one of only four that have ever been declared. \nResearchers have found evidence that the virus can be transmitted by people that don’t have symptoms. Scientists are working to find ways to treat the fever\, respiratory illness\, cough\, and breathing difficulties it causes. \nYou can learn more from this event about: \n\nThe Origins and Symptoms of the virus\nTesting\, Research\, and Diagnostics\nClinical Manifestations of COVID-19\nPrevention\, Containment\, and Transmission\n\nThis free event does not require any travel\, and will remain ongoing; webinars will continue to occur in the future as we find out more about this pathogen. The content will be available for unlimited\, on-demand viewing. The global community will be able to interact using chat sessions and live-streaming. This seamless connectivity will be available on any desktop or mobile device so you can view\, learn\, and interact. \nCall for Posters — Virtual poster sessions offer the opportunity to present data to a global audience via a PDF poster and video summary and discuss results with interested colleagues through email. Plan now to have your poster included in the Coronavirus Virtual Event Series and virtual event. Submission is free. Submit your abstract here. \nContinuing Education\nLabRoots is approved as a provider of continuing education programs in the clinical laboratory sciences by the ASCLS P.A.C.E. ® Program. By attending this virtual event series\, you can earn 1 Continuing Education credit per presentation. \nUse #LRcoronavirus to follow the conversation!

SUMMARY:Lessons Learned from Global Life Sciences Ecosystems in the COVID-19 Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:The recent announcements of three promising COVID-19 vaccines\, and others likely in the near future\, demonstrate the effectiveness and importance of the current life sciences ecosystem. These critical discoveries did not emerge tabula rasa; rather they were built on successful life science ecosystems\, including strong private sector companies\, public funding of basic research\, strong intellectual property protections\, and flexible regulatory provisions. As such\, policymakers can learn valuable lessons about what to do and not do to spur further life science innovations. \nPlease join ITIF for a discussion of this critical issue. The event will feature a keynote address by Simon Tripp of TEConomy Partners\, author of the new report “Response and Resilience: Lessons Learned from Global Life Sciences Ecosystems in the COVID-19 Pandemic\,” followed by an expert panel of respondents.

SUMMARY:Neuropixels Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Allen Institute has been monitoring the international health guidance and forecasts for COVID-19. The safety of our staff and event attendees is of the highest concern to us. Consequently\, we have made the decision to postpone the Neuropixels Workshop from June 2020 to January 2021. \nNeuropixels probes represent a major advance in neural recording technology. Developed by IMEC in collaboration with the Allen Institute\, University College London\, and Janelia Research Campus\, these probes can simultaneously measure spiking activity from hundreds of neurons distributed across the brain. Neuropixels are currently available to order through Neuropixels.org and are described in our publication in Nature. \nAt this workshop\, attendees will learn how to run acute electrophysiology experiments with Neuropixels probes and how to analyze the data using open-source software. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will consist of both interactive seminars and hands-on training sessions\, with the goal of teaching you the skills required to set up Neuropixels experiments in your lab. Emphasis will be placed on multi-probe recordings\, which take advantage of the unique capabilities of Neuropixels technology. \nDue to the hands-on nature of the workshop\, we will be limiting the number of participants to 20. We are eager to host a diverse audience\, and we encourage both trainees and bench scientists to apply. Prior experience with electrophysiology is assumed\, as we will not be going into the details of surgical techniques. Applicants do not need to have previously used or have placed an order for Neuropixels probes in order to attend. \nApplications are now closed. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop Topics\nNeuropixels Hardware \n\nWhat tools you’ll need to buy to use Neuropixels in your lab\nBest practices for handling and maintenance\nProbe alignment and insertion\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSoftware \n\nData acquisition with Open Ephys and SpikeGLX\nSpike sorting with Kilosort and phy\nNWB files and the AllenSDK\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDraft Schedule\nThursday\, June 18\, 2020\n\n\n\n\n9:00-9:30AM \n\n\nRegistration and breakfast (provided) \n\n\n\n\n9:30-10:30AM \n\n\nPast\, present\, and future of Neuropixels probes \n\n\n\n\n10:30-11:00AM \n\n\nOverview of Neuropixels hardware \n\n\n\n\n11:00AM-12:00PM \n\n\nUnboxing\, handling\, and connecting probes \n\n\n\n\n12:00-1:00PM \n\n\nLunch (provided) \n\n\n\n\n1:00-6:00PM \n\n\nRotate through hands-on training sessions:\n– Mounting and aligning probes\n– Brain stabilization and grounding\n– Live demonstration of probe use and data collection \n\n\n\n\n6:00-9:00PM \n\n\nDinner (provided) and roundtable discussion on Neuropixels experiments \n\n\n\n\n\nFriday\, June 19\, 2020\n\n\n\n\n9:00-9:30AM \n\n\nBreakfast (provided) \n\n\n\n\n9:30-10:00AM \n\n\nOverview of Neuropixels software \n\n\n\n\n10:00AM-12:00PM \n\n\nSpike sorting with Kilosort and phy \n\n\n\n\n12:00-1:00PM \n\n\nLunch (provided) \n\n\n\n\n1:00-5:00PM \n\n\nRotate through hands-on training sessions:\n– Building plugins for Open Ephys\n– NWB files and basic Neuropixels data analysis\n– Probe insertion planning and anatomical registration
