DESCRIPTION:This half-day virtual workshop will provide an introduction to building plugins for the Open Ephys GUI\, a widely used open-source application for multichannel electrophysiology. All data processing within the GUI occurs inside plugins\, which can be mixed and matched to build signal chains on the fly. In the most recent major update to the GUI\, the API for developing custom plugins has been simplified\, meaning it’s now easier to add new functionality to the software. Plugins can provide novel visualizations of incoming data\, acquire signals from external hardware\, read/write different data formats\, or trigger closed-loop feedback\, among many other possibilities. \nPrerequisites: Familiarity with the Open Ephys GUI and/or in vivo electrophysiology. Prior programming experience is strongly recommended\, but familiarity with C++ is not required. \nApplications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Apply by December 21 for full consideration. Applications will close on January 6.

DESCRIPTION:While many would think art and science are two vastly different disciplines\, one common driver often motivates them both – curiosity. \nGinny Ruffner – who currently has a retrospective exhibition open at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art on the topic of “What if?” – has worked at the intersection of art and science for decades. Her curiosity around biological concepts has propelled her to invent answers to “what if?” questions about the nature of the world around us. The experimental works she creates often involve the use of technology and mixed media to create new and imaginative experiences. Her creations are fueled by collaboration and camaraderie with scientists such as ISB President Dr. Jim Heath. \nJoin us in person at Town Hall Seattle for a conversation with internationally renowned artist Ginny Ruffner and ISB President Dr. Jim Heath. Together\, they will explore the opportunities and striking similarities that lie at the intersection of art and science. \nGinny Ruffner is a pioneering American glass artist based in Seattle. She is known for her use of the lampworking technique and for her use of borosilicate glass in her painted glass sculptures. Many of her ideas begin with drawings. Her works also include pop-up books\, large-scale public art\, and augmented reality. Ruffner was named a Master of the Medium by the James Renwick Alliance in 2007. She received The Glass Art Society’s Lifetime Award in 2019. Ruffner currently has a retrospective exhibition open at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art on the topic of “What if?” \nDr. Jim Heath is President and Professor at Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle. Heath also has the position of Professor of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology at UCLA. Formerly\, he directed the National Cancer Institute-funded NSB Cancer Center\, was the Elizabeth W. Gilloon Professor of Chemistry at Caltech\, and served as co-director of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy at UCLA until 2017.

DESCRIPTION:n this big data era\, we can easily observe substantial amounts of clinical data in large observational studies or electronic health records (EHR). Data accuracy can vary according to measurement methods. For example\, self-reported medical history can include bias\, such as recall bias or response bias. In contrast\, gold standard diagnostic tests are less likely to be biased but may not be available on all individuals in a large prospective study due to cost or participant burden. We are motivated to study what benefit we can gain by augmenting analyses of the gold standard disease outcome with error-prone self-reported disease diagnoses in regression for time-to-disease onset. The proposed model addresses left-truncation and interval-censoring in time-to-disease onset outcomes while correcting errors in self-reported disease diagnosis in a joint likelihood for the gold standard and error-prone outcomes. The proposed model is applied to the Hispanic Community Health Study/ Study of Latino data to quantify risk factors associated with diabetes onset.

DESCRIPTION:Complex Structural Variation in a Complete Human Genome with Evan Eichler\, PhD\, Principal Investigator and Professor of Genome Sciences in the Eichler Lab at the University of Washington – Genome Sciences. \nThe complete resolution of genetic variation is critical to understanding the mutational processes underlying both disease and evolution. Dr. Eichler will present his lab’s most recent work sequencing diverse human and non-human apes using both ultra-long Oxford nanopore technology and high-fidelity PacBio long-read sequencing technologies to fully phase and assemble diploid genomes with & without parental data. He will summarize their findings into more complex patterns of structural variation and the new biological insights they reveal.
