SUMMARY:Systems Biology of Aging Virtual Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Overview\nAs the global population ages\, understanding the mechanisms of aging has become an essential area of research with profound implications for healthcare\, policy and quality of life. Aging is a complex process influenced by an intricate interplay of genetic\, environmental and lifestyle factors. These factors exert their effects through various molecular mediators. With the rapid development of omics technologies\, we now have the ability to measure comprehensive sets of omics data\, including genomics\, proteomics\, metabolomics and gut microbiomics. A key question in the field is how to effectively integrate and utilize this wealth of data to advance our understanding of aging processes and potentially inform interventions. \nThis free hands-on workshop will provide practical tools for performing multi-omic systems biology analyses. The intended audience is graduate students\, postdocs\, principal investigators\, industry scientists\, and educators. \nCourse Requirements\nCourse participants will need to register in order to receive a Zoom link and an invitation to the course’s Discord channel. Lectures will be given in Zoom and real-time tutorials will be monitored by teaching assistants via Discord. Thus\, participants will need to install both Zoom and Discord prior to the start of the course. Presentations and course materials can be accessed on the course’s GitHub repository. Course presentations can be viewed on a web browser (smartphone-compatible). Course tutorials will be run in Jupyter notebooks within a cloud-based interactive computing platform. Participants are encouraged to develop a basic familiarity with Zoom\, Discord\, and Jupyter notebooks prior to the course. The course will assume some basic coding knowledge in R/Python — see additional resources below. \nAdditional Resources\n\nR for Data Science\nPython Data Science Handbook with free Jupyter notebooks\n\n  \nFind out more!

SUMMARY:Human and Non-Human Primate Brain Atlases and Tools
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will present results from the BRAIN Initiative Cell Census Network (biccn.org) recently published in Science that describes the first draft of a brain-wide cell atlas of the adult human brain. Tools to visualize these data and for users to map their own data against will be described. \nThe incredible complexity of the human brain poses enormous challenges in understanding how the brain underlies our thoughts and behaviors\, and what goes wrong in disease. Furthermore\, the inaccessibility of the human brain necessitates the use of closely related model organisms to understand many aspects of brain structure and function that cannot be studied in human. New highly scalable technologies for studying individual cells on the basis of the genes they use are rapidly accelerating the field to create complete maps of the types of cells that make up the brain. These methods also allow mapping of homologous cell types across species to understand what can be studied in model organisms and what is unique about the human brain.

SUMMARY:Where AI Meets Humanity in Healthcare: What’s Next?
DESCRIPTION:The tools of artificial intelligence offer the potential for healthcare to become more effective and equitable. But as we race to embrace these advances\, are we truly ensuring that we do no harm? Thought leaders from across disciplines will discuss the complex issues that emerge as we harness AI for health. Join us in an important conversation grounded in Seattle University’s Jesuit tradition of facing challenges with reflection and contemplation. \nIn our rush to implement technologies that hold the potential to improve the quality of healthcare in obvious ways\, we must have careful conversations about whether these new tools also enable us to respect values fundamental to human dignity\, such as autonomy\, privacy\, and the right to self-determination. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\nSeattle University has gathered key thought leaders to discuss the ethical challenges and benefits that are ahead of us as businesses and researchers race to harness the powers of AI in the field of healthcare. \n\n\n\n\nChristof Koch\, President\, Chief Scientific Officer and Meritorious Investigator at the Allen Institute for Brain Science\, whose writings and investigations integrate theoretical\, computational and experimental neuroscience with philosophy and contemporary trends\, in particular artificial intelligence. He is known for believing that the mechanisms behind consciousness will be able to be scientifically explained using currently-available tools of neurobiology\, among other theories about the nature of consciousness in the context of networked complexity. \nVin Gupta\, Critical Care Pulmonologist\, Virginia Mason; Chief Medical Officer in Pharmacy\, Amazon; Affiliate Assistant Professor\, Institute of Health Metrics\, University of Washington; and Critical Care Air Transport Physician and Major in the United States Air Force Reserve Medical Corps Sciences\, has a multi-faceted perspective on global public health care and critical care response. His systems-oriented experiences give him an interesting perspective on the potential applications of AI in healthcare. \nBlythe Adamson\, Head of Outcomes Research at Flatiron; Founder\, Infectious Economics; and Affiliate Professor\, UW is a scientist\, epidemiologist and health economist using AI to compare drug and policy effectiveness with the goal of accelerating research and improving patient outcomes. Her team has pioneered deep learning language models for data extraction\, and she served as lead data scientist in the West Wing of The White House and advised public and private institutions on disease prevention. \nTy Kayam\, Principal Corporate Counsel for Health and Life Sciences\, Microsoft; Adjunct Professor of Law\, Seattle University\, advises product\, engineering and data science teams on legal issues related to the development of AI and other emerging technologies for the health and life sciences industries. She currently holds leadership positions on the Health Information Technology committee of the American Health Law Association and the eHealth\, Privacy\, and Security group of the American Bar Association.

SUMMARY:Summer Workshop on the Dynamic Brain 2024
DESCRIPTION:About This Event\n\nFounded by Adrienne Fairhall and Christof Koch\, the Summer Workshop on the Dynamic Brain is co-hosted by the Allen Institute and the Computational Neuroscience Center at the University of Washington. It is directed by Drs. Michael A. Buice\, Saskia de Vries\, Adrienne Fairhall\, Shawn Olsen\, and Eric Shea-Brown. \nThe workshop is geared towards Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows in neuroscience\, biology\, physics\, engineering\, and computer science as well as other early-career researchers at the equivalent level. Ideal candidates have a planned or established research agenda related to the course topics such as neuroanatomy and neurophysiology; neuronal cell types; connectomics; optical and electrophysiological methods for measuring and analyzing cell populations; theories and modeling of neocortex and associated structures; big data approaches; and perceptual and behavioral neuroscience with a focus on the visual system. \nAll tutorials and software packages in the course use the Python programming language. The workshop includes an optional Python bootcamp and ongoing software tutorials in modeling\, data analysis\, and computational methods. While previous experience with Python is not required or expected\, it is highly recommended that students have some previous coding experience. \nStudents will have the opportunity to receive training with featured large-scale datasets generated by the Allen Institute. Examples from past workshops include the Allen Brain Observatory Visual Coding and Neuropixels datasets. Other Allen Institute resources are available also for students to explore. \nA core component of the workshop curriculum is the completion of short research projects. With faculty guidance\, students collaborate in teams to develop and carry out a project that explores the featured open data sets. Student teams present their project proposals at the end of the first week of the course and the outcome of their work at the conclusion of the workshop to faculty and fellow participants. Previous projects from this course have been developed into publications and presented at scientific conferences.
