SUMMARY:Human and Non-Human Primate Brain Atlases and Tools
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will present results from the BRAIN Initiative Cell Census Network (biccn.org) recently published in Science that describes the first draft of a brain-wide cell atlas of the adult human brain. Tools to visualize these data and for users to map their own data against will be described. \nThe incredible complexity of the human brain poses enormous challenges in understanding how the brain underlies our thoughts and behaviors\, and what goes wrong in disease. Furthermore\, the inaccessibility of the human brain necessitates the use of closely related model organisms to understand many aspects of brain structure and function that cannot be studied in human. New highly scalable technologies for studying individual cells on the basis of the genes they use are rapidly accelerating the field to create complete maps of the types of cells that make up the brain. These methods also allow mapping of homologous cell types across species to understand what can be studied in model organisms and what is unique about the human brain.

SUMMARY:Systems Biology of Aging Virtual Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Overview\nAs the global population ages\, understanding the mechanisms of aging has become an essential area of research with profound implications for healthcare\, policy and quality of life. Aging is a complex process influenced by an intricate interplay of genetic\, environmental and lifestyle factors. These factors exert their effects through various molecular mediators. With the rapid development of omics technologies\, we now have the ability to measure comprehensive sets of omics data\, including genomics\, proteomics\, metabolomics and gut microbiomics. A key question in the field is how to effectively integrate and utilize this wealth of data to advance our understanding of aging processes and potentially inform interventions. \nThis free hands-on workshop will provide practical tools for performing multi-omic systems biology analyses. The intended audience is graduate students\, postdocs\, principal investigators\, industry scientists\, and educators. \nCourse Requirements\nCourse participants will need to register in order to receive a Zoom link and an invitation to the course’s Discord channel. Lectures will be given in Zoom and real-time tutorials will be monitored by teaching assistants via Discord. Thus\, participants will need to install both Zoom and Discord prior to the start of the course. Presentations and course materials can be accessed on the course’s GitHub repository. Course presentations can be viewed on a web browser (smartphone-compatible). Course tutorials will be run in Jupyter notebooks within a cloud-based interactive computing platform. Participants are encouraged to develop a basic familiarity with Zoom\, Discord\, and Jupyter notebooks prior to the course. The course will assume some basic coding knowledge in R/Python — see additional resources below. \nAdditional Resources\n\nR for Data Science\nPython Data Science Handbook with free Jupyter notebooks\n\n  \nFind out more!

SUMMARY:Together We Can Stop Cervical Cancer: A Conversation with Linda Eckert and Tanjila Taskin
DESCRIPTION:Delve into the urgent and critical issue of cervical cancer prevention with Dr. Linda Eckert and Tanjila Taskin\, Program Officer\, Immunization at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. \nJoin Dr. Linda Eckert\, renowned author and advocate for women’s health\, in conversation with Tanjila Taskin as they discuss Dr. Eckert’s groundbreaking book\, Enough: Because We Can Stop Cervical Cancer. Dr. Eckert weaves together her expertise as a physician and advocate with the voices of courageous cervical cancer survivors who are using their experiences to call for change. Enough is a heart-breaking\, yet hopeful\, book that takes you through the world of cervical cancer with evidence-based information\, personal stories and actionable outcomes. \nPreventing cervical cancer deaths in world’s most resource-poor settings is an important part of the global health strategy at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation including HPV vaccine introductions.  This event is open to all individuals passionate about women’s health\, including healthcare professionals\, researchers\, activists\, and community members. Together\, let’s raise awareness\, challenge the status quo\, and work towards a world where cervical cancer is no longer a threat. \nAccording to Dr. Eckert’s website\, cervical cancer kills almost 350\,000 women each year. What’s more horrifying is that millions have died of this disease that’s nearly 100% preventable. It’s no secret that healthcare is full of inequities\, with a severe lack of accessible screening and treatment programs. But women’s health care is also impeded by cultural\, gender\, and political barriers\, issues that have combined to create devastating consequences. \nEVENT SCHEDULE:  \n5:00 p.m.  Doors Open\, Visit partner tables \n5:30 p.m. Discussion starts\, Virtual event goes live \n6:15 p.m. Q & A \n6:30 p.m. Networking and connect with our partners for ways to get involved.
