Our previous events of Introduce a Girl to Photonics\, Introduce a Girl to Nanotechnology\, and Introduce a Girl to Bioengeering and had fun themed demos to help the future scientists learn fundamentals in each field. This year’s theme is CoRDS (coding\, robotics and data science). Explore demos such as learning coding fundamentals\, creating arduino projects\, and interacting with robotics! Learn from experts in the field and learn in an open and welcoming environment. This will be an open house style event with booths. The booths take about a hour to get through so even if you pick the last time slot you can get through everything.(The target age group is late elementary school and early middle school)

SUMMARY:Science in the City: The Last Butterflies - Book Signing and Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Conservation biologist Nick Haddad has spent decades studying the very rarest species of butterflies in the world – some numbering no more than what can be held in one hand. Unfortunately\, butterflies are at risk of becoming even rarer\, with many scientists fearing an insect apocalypse. Although many assume we fully understand butterflies’ natural histories\, Haddad’s studies reveal how little is still known about butterflies in decline\, and how we can use new knowledge to reverse tragic species loss. Drawing from his own first-hand experiences\, Nick Haddad will explore the challenges of tracking vanishing butterflies\, why they are disappearing\, and why they are worth saving. Join us early to explore Pacific Science Center’s Butterfly House\, starting at 6 p.m. Books will be onsite to purchase in limited quantities. Tickets are just $5 or FREE for Pacific Science Center Members.

SUMMARY:Science in the City: Coffee\, Kangaroos\, and Community: A One Health Approach
DESCRIPTION:How does the future of tree kangaroos depend on coffee and human healthcare? On June 11\, come find out from Woodland Park Zoo’s Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program\, University of Washington and local physicians as they explain the “One Health” approach to conservation – that human\, animal and environmental health are all interconnected – and how they are helping to partner indigenous communities in Papua New Guinea with Seattle-based businesses like Caffe Vita. Through this program\, the zoo is helping to maintain habitats for species like the tree kangaroo and provide healthcare to communities that never had access to modern medicine before. This free event is part of our Global Health and Development lecture series. Thanks to our partners\, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Washington Global Health Alliance. Main Gate Entrance | Doors at 6:40 p.m. | Tickets are free for everyone but we advise reserving yours to ensure getting a seat.

SUMMARY:Life Science Xchange: Closer to Convergence
DESCRIPTION:Seattle is home to both world-class healthcare research and information technology giants\, and the region’s life sciences are all the better for it. Join Xconomy on June 25 at Cambia Grove to hear the stories of three local companies taking advantage of the ever-tightening convergence of biology and data to discover\, develop\, and deliver healthcare innovation to patients—whether it’s in the form of drugs\, diagnostics\, devices\, or other solutions. \nDuring our afternoon event\, we’ll hear from company founders\, scientists\, and investors leading the way in Seattle. There will also be plenty of networking time and opportunities for one-on-one partnering meetings with life science and pharma executives.
