SUMMARY:Society for Biomaterials Annual Meeting and Exposition
DESCRIPTION:Seattle has always been a high spot for global health\, medical innovations\, and cutting-edge biomedical research. Similarly\, the Society has been the core hub for excellence in biomaterials by bringing together an international community of academic researchers\, industry scientists\, clinicians\, regulatory professionals\, and entrepreneurs to share knowledge and to learn recent developments in basic and applied biomaterials research. Seattle thus provides an excellent setting for the 2019 Society For Biomaterials annual meeting\, which will be a “pinnacle” of biomaterials innovation and excellence to educate\, learn\, and collaborate across various scientific disciplines including materials science\, biology\, engineering and medicine for improving human health.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Science Communication Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lively half-day workshop\, with plenty of research-grounded insight and hands-on science communication practice! We’ll begin with an introduction to the Message Box\, a powerful tool for sorting your thoughts into messages that are clear and compelling\, then practice sharing those messages and giving and receiving feedback with the other participants. The registration fee includes four hours of training\, snacks & coffee/tea\, a copy of Escape from the Ivory Tower by Nancy Baron\, COMPASS’s Director of Science Communication\, and a hard copy of the Message Box Workbook (also available online). \nIf you are in the Pacific Northwest and have always wanted to try a COMPASS science communication training\, this is a great opportunity to get a taste of what it’s all about!

SUMMARY:Exploring Frontiers Seminar: Christopher Mason
DESCRIPTION:The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group will host Dr. Christopher Mason\, Associate Professor of Computational Genomics at Weill Cornell Medicine\, for an afternoon seminar and reception. \nThe avalanche of easy-to-create genomics data has impacted almost all areas of medicine and science\, from cancer patients and microbial diagnostics to molecular monitoring for astronauts in space. Recent technologies and algorithms from Dr. Mason’s laboratory and others demonstrate that an integrative\, cross-kingdom view of patients (precision metagenomics) holds unprecedented biomedical potential to discern risk\, improve diagnostic accuracy\, and to map both genetic and epigenetic states around the world and in real-time. Finally\, these methods and molecular tools work together to guide the most comprehensive\, longitudinal\, multi-omic view of human astronaut physiology in the NASA Twins Study\, which lay the foundation for future long-duration spaceflight\, including sequencing\, quantifying\, and engineering genomes in space. \nPlease contact Events@alleninstitute.org if you have any questions.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday\, April 3\n3:30-5:45pm \nAllen Institute\n615 Westlake Avenue N.\nSeattle\, WA 98109 \n\n\n\n\n\nDR. MASON’S BIO \nREGISTER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n3:30 p.m. Registration Opens \n4:00-4:05 p.m. Kathy Richmond\, Welcome and Opening Remarks \n4:05-5:00 p.m. Christopher Mason\, Genomics Revolutions in Cancer\, Global Health\, and Astronauts \n5:00-5:45 p.m. Reception \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Christopher Mason\nWeill Cornell Medicine\nThe Mason laboratory develops and deploys new biochemical and computational methods in functional genomics to elucidate the genetic basis of human disease and human physiology. They create and deploy novel techniques in next-generation sequencing and algorithms for: tumor evolution\, genome evolution\, DNA and RNA modifications\, and genome/epigenome engineering. They also work closely with NIST/FDA to build international standards for these methods\, to ensure clinical-quality genome measurements/editing. They also work with NASA to build integrated molecular portraits of genomes\, epigenomes\, transcriptomes\, and metagenomes for astronauts\, which help establish the molecular foundations and genetic defenses for enabling long-term human spaceflight. \nDr. Mason has won the NIH’s Transformative R01 Award\, the NASA Group Achievement Award\, the Pershing Square Sohn Cancer Research Alliance Young Investigator award\, the Hirschl-Weill-Caulier Career Scientist Award\, the Vallee Scholar Award\, the CDC Honor Award for Standardization of Clinical Testing\, and the WorldQuant Foundation Scholar Award.  He was named as one of the “Brilliant Ten” Scientists by Popular Science\, featured as a TEDMED speaker\, and called “The Genius of Genetics” by 92Y.  He has >150 peer-reviewed papers that have been featured on the covers of Nature\, Science\, Nature Biotechnology\, Nature Microbiology\, Neuron\, and Genome Biology and Evolution\, as well as cited by the U.S. District Court and U.S. Supreme Court.  His work has also appeared on the covers of the Wall Street Journal\, TIME\, LA Times\, New York Times\, and across many media (ABC\, NBC\, CBC\, CBS\, Fox\, CNN\, PBS\, NASA\, NatGeo). He has co-founded several biotechnology start-up companies\, including Biotia and Onegevity Health\, and serves as an advisor to many others. He lives with his daughter and wife in Brooklyn\, NY. \nDr. Mason’s background and appointments: \n\nB.S. in Genetics\, University of Wisconsin-Madison (2001)\nB.S. in Biochemistry\, University of Wisconsin-Madison (2001)\nPh.D. in Genetics\, Yale University (2006)\nPost-doc\, Clinical Genetics. SUMMARY:Science in the City: Eradicating Malaria - The Big Fight Against Little Mosquitos
DESCRIPTION:Malaria continues to affect many countries in Africa despite being a treatable and preventable disease. The renewed global attention on these hard-hit countries has left many searching for solutions that work in hard-to-reach areas with limited resources. Join Pilgrim Africa and Dorothy Echodu\, who share 11 years of experience\, in a conversation about the struggle to find a fast\, affordable and safe way to defeat this scourge. \nThis free event is part of our Global Health and Development lecture series. Thanks to our partners\, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Washington Global Health Alliance. North Entrance | Doors at 6:40 p.m. | Tickets are free for everyone but we advise reserving yours to ensure getting a seat.
