SUMMARY:2021 ISB Virtual Microbiome Series
DESCRIPTION:On October 13 – 15\, 2021\, ISB will host a virtual course and symposium on the latest cutting edge microbiome research. \nISB is hosting a series of events in October of 2021 that highlight recent advances toward understanding general patterns of commensal population genomic variation within the human gut\, how fine-scale commensal genomic variation is influenced by host phenotypic variation\, and whether or not commensal genomic variation has an impact on human health and disease. \nCourse participants will need to register below in order to receive a Zoom link and an invitation to the course’s Slack account. Lectures will be given in Zoom and real-time tutorials will be monitored by teaching assistants via Slack. Thus\, participants will need to install both Zoom and Slack prior to the start of the course. Presentations and course materials can be accessed on the course’s GitHub repository (coming soon). Course presentations can be viewed on a web browser (smartphone compatible). Course tutorials will be run in ipython notebooks within Google Colab\, which provides all participants with free computational resources\, but will also require everyone to sign up for a Google account (if they do not already have one). The first half of the course will be run using Quantitative Insights Into Microbial Ecology 2 (QIIME2). The second half of the course will involve building genome-scale metabolic models for individual bacterial isolates to map genomic variation onto ecological niche space. \n

SUMMARY:Science Says – Finding New Ways to Stop Solid Tumors
DESCRIPTION:While our efforts to stop COVID-19 remain critical\, they haven’t slowed our quest to cure cancer. Hear from scientists who are finding vulnerabilities in solid tumors — including breast\, lung\, and stomach cancers — to design better treatments and cures. We’ll also share up-to-the-minute insights about COVID and answer your questions. \nFred Hutch is world-renowned for pioneering bone marrow transplantation\, T-cell therapies\, and other strategies that use the power of the immune system to treat and cure blood cancers\, like leukemia and lymphoma. We’re using our understanding of cancer and immunity to develop new solid tumor therapies that can be tailored to each patient’s biology and the unique characteristics of their cancer. President and Director Dr. Tom Lynch\, a lung cancer physician\, will talk with scientists who are leading the way. \nSpeaker or Presenter:\nDrs. Thomas Lynch Jr.\, Nancy Davidson\, McGarry Houghton\, Nina Salama\, and Joshua Schiffer

SUMMARY:Exploring Frontiers: Predicting Biology Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Model systems have been used to successfully pioneer foundational research\, leading not only to an advanced understanding of biological systems but also to translational breakthroughs. However\, only a portion of scientific results seen in mice are mirrored in humans. How can we better infer which observations will hold true in both systems? \nJoin us as we highlight innovative approaches addressing this frontier challenge. The webinar will include speaker presentations and a lively panel discussion on the challenges\, opportunities and next steps needed to move the needle in modeling mouse to human inference. See below for the agenda and speaker information. \n\n \n\n\n8:50 – 9:00am – Virtual meeting log-in\n9:00 – 9:05am – Kathryn Richmond\, The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group\, Welcome and introductory remarks\n9:05 – 9:30am – Shai Shen-Orr\, Technion Medicine\n9:30 – 9:55am – Nadia Rosenthal\, The Jackson Laboratory\n9:55 – 10:05am – Break\n10:05 – 10:30am – Douglas Brubaker\, Purdue University\n10:30 – 11:00am – Panel Discussion and Q&A\, moderated by Stacey Finley\, University of Southern California

SUMMARY:BBI’s Danny Miller Conducting Seminar on Long-Read Sequencing using Nanopore Platform
DESCRIPTION:BBI’s Dr. Danny Miller will conduct a seminar at 12 noon October 5 on long-read genome sequencing on the Nanopore platform and how it can help researchers across the Institute. Registration is available here: BBI Long Read Sequencing Seminar- Oct 5th at 12 noon . \nMiller\, a pediatrics and medical genetics resident at Seattle Children’s Hospital and UW Medicine\, wants to encourage members to think of ongoing projects – or new projects – that may benefit from the technology. \n“Participants in the seminar will learn the advantages\, challenges\, and limitations of the technology\,” Miller said. “This technology works best when done at scale and by individuals who have experience with using the sequencer.” Miller is offering sequencing and support to all BBI members\, including DNA and RNA sequencing of human samples and other organisms of interest. He plans to offer basic analysis as part of the service. \nHis work on genetic diagnoses of rare diseases was funded in 2019 by a BBI “Catalytic Collaboration” grant\, which led to a R01 grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
