SUMMARY:Understanding the Temporal and Spatial Cellular Dynamics of Making a Left-Right Organizer
DESCRIPTION:The Hehnly Lab investigates how cellular and intracellular mechanisms establish the Left-Right Organizer (LRO) in vertebrates\, a critical structure for body axis formation. Using zebrafish as a model\, the lab explores how motile and non-motile cilia within the LRO generate fluid flow or potentially sense it\, impacting asymmetric organ development. Open questions include how cells differentiate to form motile versus non-motile cilia and the roles these cilia play in development. Through live imaging\, gene expression profiling\, and cytoskeletal analysis\, the lab aims to reveal spatial and temporal cellular events essential for LRO maturation\, ultimately informing models of ciliated tissue development.

If she behaved more like the egg\, confident and patient\, rather than like the sperm\, endlessly searching for approval\, could she find a happier life? \nThis is Sarah’s coming-of-age journey through bat mitzvah humiliation\, data-driven dating\, the sperm bank porn library\, and a surprise meeting with her lab’s HR department that would force her to reckon with whether she’s ready to truly become the EGG. \nSarah Adelman is a New York City-born comedian and former reproductive health research scientist. She performs at venues across New York and has appeared on The Today Show and HBO’s Game Theory. Earlier this year\, Sarah was a resident at Ars Nova’s Comedy Artist Makers’ Program\, where she developed and premiered EGG. EGG was an official selection of the New York Comedy Festival. Her short film “BUSTED!” will be released in 2025.

He is the incumbent of the Eden and Steven Romick Professorial Chair. \nProf. Amit is a world leader and pioneer in the fields of single-cell genomics and clinical big-data analytics. He has spearheaded the application of these technologies to generate a comprehensive “google map” of the entire immune system and how it is perturbed in disease. Prof. Amit’s research addresses some of the most fundamental questions in immunology. SUMMARY:Allen Institute for Immunology Seminar Series with Dr. Susan Kaech
DESCRIPTION:The Allen Institute for Immunology will be hosting Dr. Susan Kaech on Tuesday\, March 11th\, 2025 at 1pm at the Allen Institute.   Susan Kaech is a Salk Institute Professor\, Director of the NOMIS Center for Immunobiology and Microbial Pathogenesis\, and holder of the NOMIS Chair. Prior to this she was a Waldemar Von Zedtwitz Professor at Yale University in the Department of Immunobiology (2004–2018). Dr. Kaech did her postdoctoral work with Dr. Rafi Ahmed at Emory University (1999–2004) and\nreceived her PhD in Developmental Biology at Stanford University. She received her BS in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Washington. Dr. Kaech aims to understand how memory T cells are produced during infection and vaccination\, how they function and why in some particular cases\, they fail to induce long-term immunity. Her lab has been a leader in using genetic and molecular tools to identify the genes and signaling molecules involved in generating two specific types of memory T cells\, CD4 and CD8\, from precursor cells during both acute and chronic viral infections. Her lab has made several notable discoveries in elucidating how and when memory T cells form following infection or vaccination.  More recently\, her lab has begun exploring how immune cells function in the brain and interact with peripheral nerves in healthy organs and those overcome by cancer.  Additionally\, her research examines the potential roles of T cells in Alzheimer’s disease.

DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will gain in-depth exposure on how the Allen Institute defines “cell types” and walk away with direct\, applicable examples on using our free\, open tools for their research. Allen Institute for Brain Science has created a treasure trove of data and variety of tools. This workshop will help you navigate these resources and give you example cases to apply them to your work. This review article by our EVP & Director of Allen Institute of Brain Science\, Hongkui Zeng\, explains cell types and how to define them. \nThis workshop is geared toward early-career scientists\, especially graduate students\, postdocs\, research associates\, and data analysts\, who are interested in developing their understanding of cell types and how to refine their research with the techniques taught. However\, faculty and senior scientists are welcome to apply. \nApplications are open now and are due on December 6\, 2024. All applications will be notified of the decision on their application by January 1\, 2025. \nGABAergic\, glutamatergic\, dopaminergic – if this is how you classify your cell types\, this workshop is for you! \nIn this workshop\, participants will gain in-depth exposure on how Allen Institute defines “cell types” and work with direct\, applicable examples of how to use the Allen Institute’s free\, open resources & tools for research. The highlighted tools featured at the workshop are Cell Types Knowledge Explorer and Allen Brain Cell (ABC) Atlas\, both of which include definitions and taxonomies of cell types\, cell properties used in those definitions\, and resources for applying these types to your cells. \nNo prior experience with Allen Institute tools\, methods or techniques is required. We highly encourage non-R1\, translational research\, undergraduate-focused\, and small labs to apply. \nWe will provide up to $1500 in travel & accommodation support for accepted participants. There is no application fee.
