SUMMARY:Current Biology Seminar - Dr. Bing Ren
DESCRIPTION:The Basic Sciences Division hosts a weekly Current Biology Seminar series where leading-edge researchers are invited from around the world to share their latest scientific breakthroughs. Lectures are typically every Tuesday and are held as virtual events. \nSpeaker: Bing Ren\, Ph.D. \nThe Ren Lab investigates the mechanisms of gene regulation in normal and cancer cells. Bing Ren’s study has contributed to the understanding of genome organization and regulation in human cells. He invented a transformative approach for genome-wide determination of transcription factor binding and chromatin modification. The lab produced the first comprehensive maps of transcriptional regulatory sequences in the human genome that helped to advance our understanding of the dynamic and cell-type-specific expression of genes.

SUMMARY:BBI Data Analysis Tutorial
DESCRIPTION:The BBI bioinformatics team is hosting a Monocle 3 tutorial/training to help you navigate your single-cell RNA-seq data. This tutorial is aimed at assisting you with questions and concerns regarding single-cell data analysis using Monocle 3. Although we encourage anyone interested to attend\, this particular session is mainly for researchers that have little to no experience with the R programming language or analyzing single-cell data and is primarily aimed to assist beginners. In the future\, we will have further tutorials for intermediate and more advanced skill levels. \nThe prerequisites for this session are:1. R & R studio installed2. Monocle 3 installed \nDuring this session\, we will cover the following topics:1. An introduction to Monocle 32. Loading\, QC and initial filtering of data3. Pre-processing data\, dimensionality reduction and making a basic UMAP4. Basic clustering and plotting genes of interest5. Finding top markers6. Gene ontology/gene set analysisThere will also be some time to address specific questions. \nHost: Aishwarya GogateWhen: Tuesday\, 7th December 2021 from 9am – 11amWhere: Zoom meeting

SUMMARY:Life Science Washington Institute’s BioBash
DESCRIPTION:Life Science Washington Institute’s annual BioBash is a celebration of Washington state life science entrepreneurs and the community partners that support them. This event brings together entrepreneurs\, investors\, and ecosystem leaders to recognize the discoveries\, achievements\, and innovations that have shaped Washington’s life science industry. Not only do we celebrate our state’s incredible entrepreneurs\, but we also recognize the coaches\, consultants\, and mentors who provided their invaluable support to uplift and inspire the next generation of life science leaders. \nTwo awards will be presented during BioBash: \nLife Science Entrepreneurial Achievement Award\, sponsored and presented by Perkins Coie \nIngrid K. Ruf\, PhD\, WIN Mentor of the Year award\, presented by Fenwick & West \nPlease come celebrate with beverages and light hors d’oeuvres. All food and drink will be individually packaged/wrapped by the caterer. \nCOVID PROTOCOL: LSWI will require ID and proof of COVID vaccination from all attendees at our in-person events until further notice. Acceptable proofs of vaccination include the physical vaccination card\, a photo of the vaccination card on a cell phone\, or a screenshot of vaccination status through an online portal such as MyIR. Please have these with you ready to show upon arrival. \nSince this is an indoor event\, masks will be required and enforced for all participants unless actively eating/drinking.

SUMMARY:Biostatistics Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:The Fred Hutch Biostatistics Program hosts seminars featuring presentations by Hutch and outside scientists to share their latest developments and recent research. Each seminar includes an hour-long presentation and discussion during which speakers showcase their work and findings. \nThis seminar will be held on Zoom due to the COVID-19 pandemic. \nAbstract: \nHeterogeneous treatment effects (HTE) based on patients’ genetic or clinical covariates are of rising interest to precision medicine. Simultaneously modeling HTE and associated main effects for high-dimensional markers is challenging. Motivated by the modified covariate approach\, we propose a two-stage statistical learning procedure for estimating HTE with efficiency augmentation\, exploiting powerful gradient boosting trees (GBT). Target estimands for HTE are defined as the mean difference for quantitative outcomes\, or the risk ratio for binary outcomes\, solving specialized loss functions. The first stage is to estimate the main-effect equivalency of baseline covariates on the outcome\, which is then used as an augmentation term in the second stage estimation for HTE. The proposed two-stage procedure is robust to model mis-specification of main effects and achieve optimal efficiency for estimating HTE through consistent nonparametric function estimation. A permutation test is proposed for the global assessment of high-dimensional HTE via GBT. Simulation experiments and an analysis of a genetic study in Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial are conducted to showcase the properties and the utilities of the two-stage method.
