Register for the upcoming seminars below. \n\n\nLiqun Luo | May 20\, 2021\nWiring specificity of neural circuits \n\n\nDeveloping brains utilize a limited number of molecules to specify connection specificity of a much larger number of neurons and synapses. How is this feat achieved? In this talk\, I will first discuss our work using the Drosophila olfactory circuit as a model to address this question. I will then discuss analogous functions of some of the wiring molecules we identified in the fly olfactory circuits also in determining wiring specificity of complex circuits in the mammalian brain\, focusing on the hippocampal network. \nDr. Luo is currently the Ann and Bill Swindells Professor in the School of Humanities and Sciences\, Professor of Biology\, and Professor of Neurobiology by courtesy at Stanford University\, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. He earned his bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from the University of Science and Technology of China. After obtaining his PhD in Brandeis University\, and postdoctoral training at the University of California\, San Francisco\, Dr. Luo started his own lab in the Department of Biology\, Stanford University in December 1996. Together with his postdoctoral fellows and graduate students\, Dr. Luo studies how neural circuits are organized to perform specific functions in adults\, and how they are assembled during development. \n\n\n\n \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Neuroscience without Neurons: Bodies without Brains and Other Musings in Science
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: \nManu Prakash\nInstitution: \nStanford University | Associate Professor\, Department of Bioengineering\nSeminar date: \nMonday\, May 24\, 2021 – 12:00 to 13:00\nLocation: \nZoom\n\nWe use interdisciplinary approaches including theory and experiments to understand how computation is embodied in biological matter. Examples include cognition in single cell protists and morphological computing in animals with no neurons and origins of complex behavior in multi-cellular systems. We will also share new tools to enable “virtual reality arena” for single cells – enabling never before seen behavior of single cells over multiple spatial and temporal scales. Broadly\, these new tools for studying non-model organisms have significant implications for studying life in the ocean – addressing fundamental questions such as how do cells sense ecological parameters or “cell biology of climate change”. Examples include cognition in single cell protists and morphological computing in animals with no neurons and origins of complex behavior in multi-cellular systems. We will also share new tools to enable “virtual reality arena” for single cells – enabling never before seen behavior of single cells over multiple spatial and temporal scales. Broadly\, these new tools for studying non-model organisms have significant implications for studying life in the ocean – addressing fundamental questions such as how do cells sense ecological parameters or “cell biology of climate change”. DESCRIPTION:une is the 40th anniversary of the first Centers for Disease Control & Prevent (CDC) report on what would come to be known as AIDS and the start of the HIV pandemic. Over four decades\, the global struggle to contain HIV has seen the best and worst of human nature\, and it seems as if its many lessons are being slowly forgotten. \nJoin us on June 2\, as we remember those we’ve lost to HIV and honor those who work tirelessly in response to the epidemic. And we will celebrate the strength and resilience of people who have been living with HIV for decades\, and from their example renew ourselves and our vision to end HIV for everyone everywhere. \n\n\n\n\n\nFred Hutch President and Director Dr. Tom Lynch will moderate a conversation with Drs. Larry Corey\, George W.
