SUMMARY:Bees\, Guts\, Soil\, and Cancer
DESCRIPTION:How are the health of soil\, plants\, bees\, and humans connected? An all-star panel of experts joins us to answer this question with a discussion of the microscopic universe at the beginning and end of our food chain—the microbiome. Delve into the intricate world of microbes present in every human\, the bacteria that help us digest food\, regulate our immune system\, and produce vitamins essential to our health. Explore unique connections that expand our everyday understanding—the decline of bees as related to the health of our soil and the quality of microbiomes within bees’ diets\, the relationship of cancer to our digestive health\, and more. Sit in for an enlightening discussion of the unseen but powerful factors affecting our health\, our environment\, and many more aspects of our lives than we could have thought possible. \nPanelists: \nElissa Arnheim combines her health and ecology expertise in fostering robust populations and resilient terrain in children’s guts. She helps mothers reverse their children’s chronic health issues while taking care of themselves. Arnheim’s work gives moms empowered clarity by reducing stomach problems\, anxiety and focus issues\, and picky eating. \nAnne Biklé is a science writer and public speaker. She has over two decades of experience in field biology\, natural history\, and environmental planning. Her work focuses on the connections between people\, plants\, food\, health\, and the environment. Biklé is the co-author of The Hidden Half of Nature: The Microbial Roots of Life and Health. \nWilliam DePaolo is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington\, recipient of the Garvey Endowed Chair in Gastroenterology\, and Director of CMiST\, Center for Microbiome Sciences & Therapeutics. His research centers on multidisciplinary applications of microbiology\, mucosal immunology\, and cancer research to study complex human diseases. \nJenifer Walke\, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Biology at Eastern Washington University. She is a microbial and disease ecologist\, studying the roles of beneficial and disease-causing microorganisms on their hosts and investigating the complex interactions between honey bee hosts\, their gut microbiomes\, and pathogens.

SUMMARY:Discovery Series: Dr. Lea Starita - Using CRISPR to Advance Precision Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Reading the news\, it can be easy to imagine that all of the cool research is coming out of MIT or Stanford. But folks at the Fred Hutch\, WSU\, UW\, PNNL\, and other local research institutions are turning out game-changing\, and in some cases\, life-altering\, research. The Discovery Series offers the broader community an opportunity to learn about new discoveries and cutting-edge technologies directly from our state’s leading scientists and innovators. \nJoin us for lunch on the second Friday of almost every month (Sept-June\, except December) at a cool location around town to get educated\, inspired\, connected. Designed to bring together the state’s preeminent researchers\, innovative leaders\, and elected officials who want to stay on top of important advancements being made in our state\, each Discovery Series program will include lunch\, networking time\, a Q&A session\, and an opportunity to meet the speaker. \nSince 1997\, more than 150 presenters have informed and amazed us with everything from neurobotics\, video of gigantic tubeworms living next to hot vents in the Atlantic Ocean\, the fight against malaria\, genetically engineered food truths and myths\, the promise of predictive medicine\, and images from the world’s most powerful telescope.

SUMMARY:Science in the City - Octopus Intelligence: Untangling a Distributed Brain
DESCRIPTION:Octopi\, Octopuses\, or Octopodes? However you say it\, the octopus has fascinated humans for thousands of years. With no bones\, a nervous system mostly in their arms\, and remarkable camouflage abilities\, they’re perhaps the best example of alternative forms of intelligence. However\, little is known about basic octopus behaviors…until now. \nNew technologies are enabling researchers to rapidly expand our knowledge by investigating octopus behavior in greater detail than ever before. To discuss\, Dr. David Gire highlights how labs around the world are putting these new approaches to work\, current findings on how octopuses think\, and how members of the community can get involved with this fascinating research. \nCost: Members\, Free / General Public\, $5 \nRecommended Ages: All ages
