SUMMARY:2019 Bio in the Brewery
DESCRIPTION:Join Life Science Washington in Ballard for a delicious\, cold pint (or two) and chance to win a prize – including a pass to our annual Life Science Innovation Northwest conference. It’s a great time to join your life science colleagues and enjoy some of our state’s best beer. \nRobyn Schumacher\, co-founder & brewer at Stoup and certified Cicerone\, will join us for a discussion on the science of beer and on her role at Stoup\, with time for Q&A. Ticket price of $20 for members/$35 for non-members includes 2 pints of beer and appetizers. Arrive by 6 PM to be eligible for a fun prize drawing. \nThe is event has limited space. Only 75 people can participate. Sign up early to claim your spot. It will be a really fun night with a diverse group of people\, including\, CEOs\, business executives\, managers\, scientists\, and beer enthusiasts. \nAbout the host and special guest speaker:\nRobyn Schumacher\, Brewer & Cicerone\, Stoup Brewing  \nRobyn’s beer journey started with her first glorious sip of craft brewed Hefeweizen while studying biology in Helena\, Montana. (Truthfully\, it started earlier than that if you think that thin yellow stuff pumped from warm kegs at parties in the woods can be called beer.) She’s not sure if the clean\, crisp Montana air had anything to do with the near religious experience or if it was just an amazing pint of Hefeweizen. But she is sure that the beer yeast was sowed right then and there.  And it would follow her for the rest of her life. \nStoup Brewing melds Robyn’s two great loves\, beer and science.  After 13 years of teaching\,  she decided that the beer industry was just too alluring to ignore any longer. In a reversal of roles\, Robyn hit the books and immersed herself in the brewing community.  She attended the Master Brewers Association conference\, interned at a local brewery\, managed the beer program at a Seattle eatery\, and prepped for the Cicerone Certification Exam. In 2012\, Robyn passed the exam and became Washington State’s first female Cicerone! \nOpening her own brewery has been Robyn’s dream for many years.  Coincidentally it was also her co-founders\, Brad & Lara’s dream too. Now she gets to brew great beer in a community that loves their brews. Join us on March 26th to find out why!

SUMMARY:Stem Cells & Gene Editing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Genome engineering in stem cells has tremendous scientific potential\, but beginning your work in this field can be daunting. The Allen Institute for Cell Science has developed systematic workflows for endogenous gene tagging in human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs)\, as well as best practices along the way. Using these methods we have created a collection of fluorescently tagged hiPSC lines as described on allencell.org and in our publication in MBoC. \nApply to join us on Wednesday\, March 27 to learn the ins and outs of working with stem cells and performing endogenous gene tagging using CRISPR/Cas9 directly from our scientists. \n\n\n\nWe’ll open the workshop with interactive seminars about endogenous gene tagging for both expressed and non-expressed genes including a hands-on session on the use of basic bioinformatics tools for designing crRNAs and donor plasmids for gene tagging as well as the genomic and cell biological QC assays and workflows we use to generate high quality clonal cell lines. In the afternoon\, step into our labs for live\, in-depth demonstrations of many aspects of stem cell maintenance and characterization. We’ll wrap up the afternoon with a discussion session with our scientists that specialize in gene editing\, cardiomyocyte differentiation\, microscopy\, image analysis\, and modeling. A detailed list of topics is available below. \nDue to the hands-on nature of this workshop and focused\, small group discussions\, we have limited the number of participants to 25. We encourage trainees and bench scientists interested in gene editing in stem cells to apply (no more than one per lab).  We are eager to host a diverse audience at this workshop and will be providing travel awards to a few attendees based on scientific area of interest and financial need. Applications are due by February 22\, 2019. There is a $50 fee to apply to attend\, which will be refunded if your application is not approved for the workshop. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nWorkshop Topics\nGene Editing \n\ncrRNA and donor molecule design for knock-in\nPractical workflows for generating clonal hiPSC lines\nTips\, tricks\, and best practices for identifying precisely edited\, healthy hiPSC clones\n\nStem Cells \n\nPassaging\, thawing and cryopreserving hiPSC\nIdentifying good hiPSC morphology\nPassaging and cryopreserving hiPSC clones in 96-well plates\nBest practices for flow analysis and sorting of hiPSC\n\nDraft Schedule\n\n\n\n\n8:30-9:00AM \n\n\nRegistration and breakfast \n\n\n\n\n9:00-10:00AM \n\n\nGene Editing Part I \n\n\n\n\n10:00-10:15AM \n\n\nAM Break \n\n\n\n\n10:15-11:30AM \n\n\nGene Editing Part II \n\n\n\n\n11:30AM-12:30PM \n\n\nLunch \n\n\n\n\n12:30-12:45PM \n\n\nPreparation for lab demos \n\n\n\n\n12:45-3:15PM \n\n\nGroups rotate through lab demonstrations \n\n\n\n\n3:15-3:30PM \n\n\nPM Break \n\n\n\n\n3:30-4:30PM \n\n\nRoundtable discussions with Institute scientists

SUMMARY:Exploring Frontiers Seminar: Christopher Mason
DESCRIPTION:The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group will host Dr. Christopher Mason\, Associate Professor of Computational Genomics at Weill Cornell Medicine\, for an afternoon seminar and reception. \nThe avalanche of easy-to-create genomics data has impacted almost all areas of medicine and science\, from cancer patients and microbial diagnostics to molecular monitoring for astronauts in space. Recent technologies and algorithms from Dr. Mason’s laboratory and others demonstrate that an integrative\, cross-kingdom view of patients (precision metagenomics) holds unprecedented biomedical potential to discern risk\, improve diagnostic accuracy\, and to map both genetic and epigenetic states around the world and in real-time. Finally\, these methods and molecular tools work together to guide the most comprehensive\, longitudinal\, multi-omic view of human astronaut physiology in the NASA Twins Study\, which lay the foundation for future long-duration spaceflight\, including sequencing\, quantifying\, and engineering genomes in space. \nPlease contact Events@alleninstitute.org if you have any questions.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday\, April 3\n3:30-5:45pm \nAllen Institute\n615 Westlake Avenue N.\nSeattle\, WA 98109 \n\n\n\n\n\nDR.
