SUMMARY:Introduction to Lichen Identification and Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Lichens are symbiotic organisms–fungi living with photosynthesizing partners–that are all around us. Lichens are beautiful\, and they also play critical roles in ecosystems. As small organisms that are sensitive to fine-scale environmental conditions\, lichens can be used as powerful ecological indicators. Once you begin to pay attention to lichens you can hear the stories they’re telling about the world around us. \nThis two-day workshop will focus on developing skills for identifying common Pacific Northwest macrolichens (foliose and fruticose lichens). We will focus on characteristics for field identification as well as characteristics seen through dissecting microscopes in the lab. We will also discuss the use of chemical “spot tests”\, an essential tool for distinguishing similar lichen species\, though we are not allowed to actually use chemicals in our lab space at UW. We will meet from 9 am to 4:30 pm on October 4 and 5. \nStudents will learn to recognize and distinguish between pollution-tolerant lichen communities that we often see in cities and the more pristine communities that occur in places with high air quality. After taking this course you will be sure to observe lichens\, big or small\, almost everywhere you go!

SUMMARY:SpaceVision 2025
DESCRIPTION:SpaceVision is almost as old as its organization\, Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS). It focuses on bringing together students of many disciplines from all corners of the country to celebrate their shared passion for all things space. Building on the tradition started 41 years ago in 1983 amongst the first SEDS chapters\, this gathering includes panels of industry leaders\, technical project competitions\, and opportunities for our members to engage with current professionals from across the space sector. The growth of the conference in recent years parallels SEDS’ own remarkable expansion while preserving the original focus on creating student connections and empowering everyone to pursue a future in space. \nSpaceVision 2025 will show you the space industry from a different perspective. This 3 -day experience will intertwine technology\, policy\, business\, and art to illustrate the interdisciplinary fields that makes our future in space possible. We’re here to invent\, to explore\, to include\, and to connect future leaders of space wherever they may be. Join us in making that future a reality! \nCheck out our website for more details: spacevision.seds.org

SUMMARY:Smarty Pints! Clouds\, Grasses\, and Climate
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with a paleobotany professor and an atmospheric sciences student\, with plenty of time for Q&A!\n\n\n\nNeed interesting talking points for Thanksgiving? Come on over to Burke-Gilman Brewing for the next Smarty Pints! We’re going to touch grass\, watch clouds\, and tie it all back to ancient and modern climate change. \n🌾 Dr. Caroline Strömberg \nProfessor in UW Biology & Curator of Paleobotany at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture \nHow grasses took over the world \nGrasses are all around us\, whether in the form of lawns\, golf courses\, wheat fields or the contents of your popcorn bag. Yet few people think of grasses as an evolutionarily extremely successful group\, or wonder how they came to be so ubiquitous in less than ~30 million years. This talk will explore what we know about the evolutionary history of grasses and grassland ecosystems and how it related to climate change and animal evolution. \n☁️ Aakash Manapat \nGraduate student\, UW Atmospheric and Climate Science \nHow clouds control our climate \nClouds are ubiquitous features of Earth’s weather. However\, their mundaneness hides a surprising level of complexity. Join me to learn about why scientists still struggle to understand clouds\, and why clouds represent a major uncertainty when trying to understand climate change. \nSmarty Pints is not responsible for any family arguments arising from discussions related to Smarty Pints events. Trust your judgement. Maybe talk about the great beer you had.

SUMMARY:PNRI Science Matters Seminar: Omic-Driven Precision Care in South Africa
DESCRIPTION:Shahida Moosa\, MBBCh\, PhD of Tygerberg Hospital and Stellenbosch University will discuss the growing role of omics-driven precision care in South Africa\, and how these advances are transforming the landscape of rare disease diagnosis and management across the lifespan. Through the Undiagnosed Disease Programme\, recent work has demonstrated the power of integrating multiple layers of genomic technology: from exome and genome sequencing to long-read platforms and RNA sequencing\, to uncover the molecular basis of rare and previously undiagnosed conditions. In a setting as diverse and complex as South Africa\, where genetic variation is vast and healthcare resources constrained\, these tools do more than generate data: they create answers\, enable tailored care\, and provide long-awaited clarity for families who have spent years on a diagnostic odyssey.  Register today for FREE! \nPNRI Science Matters Seminars \nPNRI’s Science Matters free\, virtual seminars feature discussions with scientists around the globe about exciting research in genetics\, genomics\, and evolutionary biology with important societal impact. Topics include research on the genetics of ethnically diverse populations\, diseases afflicting vulnerable or underserved groups\, and efforts to expand the diversity (broadly defined) of research subjects or the scientific workforce.
