DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered about the components of our blood\, and how those components might be affected by cancer? For those who missed this event last year\, YWIB-Seattle is collaborating again with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to offer a hands-on laboratory experience to interested 8th through 12th grade students! Dr. Beverly Torok-Storb (FHCRC) will provide the necessary biological background\, and a guided lab will follow in which students separate blood components and observe blood smears under a microscope. No prior lab experience required. \nNotes: \n\nIn order to participate in this event\, students must complete and submit the FHCRC permission form located here. The form must be signed by a parent/guardian and emailed as a PDF to Lori Blake (lblake@fredhutch.org) by February 21\, 2020\, AND brought as a hard copy to the event on February 26\, 2020. As we build toward the final extravaganza in Brooklyn on May 12\, our cities around the world will be holding their own celebrations — and the party starts in Seattle\, where we’ll present an extra-special evening of true\, personal stories about science. \nHosted by Emi Okikawa and Melia Paguirigan. \n\n\nStories by: \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCindy Healy is a wife\, mom\, daughter\, friend\, woman in tech and STEM advocate and speaker. She lives in a multi-generational\, multi-species household in Woodinville Washington with her husband\, son\, parents and two dogs.  Cindy knows great advice when she hears it and is thankful she listened when told: “you should get a degree in Computer Science”\, ” why not try internet dating?” and “you need to try yoga.”  She enjoys listening to podcasts\, storytelling\,  pushing herself and others to get out of their comfort zones and day dreaming about sunny and warm climates. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrenna Sowder is a writer and nonprofit communications professional. She has spent much of her life on boats looking for whales\, first as the daughter of a marine biologist\, later as a research assistant in the Bay of Fundy\, and now with her family in the Salish Sea. In addition to telling mission-driven stories for nonprofits\, she has worked as an environmental educator and freelance journalist. These days\, she divides her time between writing and raising two small humans. She is currently working on a memoir\, and she also writes essays about how to be an observer of nature and her evolving definition of an adventurous life. She lives outside Seattle with her family. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCecilia Aragon is an author\, pilot\, scientist and the first Latina full professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Washington. She’s worked with Nobel Prize winners\, taught astronauts to fly\, and created musical simulations of the universe with rock stars. She’s a co-founder of Latinas in Computing and a passionate advocate for girls and women in STEM. Her research discoveries\, and a stint at NASA designing software for Mars missions\, led President Obama to call her “one of the top scientists and engineers in the country.” She lives in Seattle and has a memoir\, Flying Free\, coming out in September.
