SUMMARY:11th EMT International Association (TEMTIA 11)
DESCRIPTION:The Allen Institute for Cell Science is excited to host the 11th EMT International Association (TEMTIA 11) meeting in Seattle\, Washington\, USA. November 12-15\, 2024. Please find meeting information below.  \nThe epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a cell state change during which cells transition from stationary to migratory behavior. This transition happens in various contexts\, including normal and disease states. EMT involves numerous changes across multiple cell characteristics\, adding to the complexity of defining this process consistently and universally. TEMTIA 11 will embrace this challenge\, drawing strength from the diversity of the field\, bringing together experts across contexts\, perspectives\, and scales of study and organizing them across (rather than within) sessions with common themes. These will include topics such as data integration\, microscopy in EMT\, modeling of state changes\, and more. We will host poster sessions to foster productive communication and collaboration.  \nRegistration will close May 31. \nRegister now!

SUMMARY:Crash Course & Astronomy on Tap Present: Your Guide to the Galaxy
DESCRIPTION:Crash Course: Where Smart Meets Funny is Seattle’s first night-class/comedy-game show mashup that brings in brilliant Seattleites to share their ideas and expertise. Hosted by comedian Marcus Van Valen and scientist Caroline Duncombe\, this interactive experience presents informative\, wacky\, and inspiring topics across all disciplines. After a night of intellectual shenanigans\, one burning question will remain: Are you smarter than a comedian? \nShowtime: \nDoors open at 6:30pm. \nShow starts at 7:00pm. \nMeet the Experts: \n\n\n\n\nName / Pronouns / Job: Emily Levesque (pronounced “la-VEK”)\, she/her\, astronomy professor at UW \nJob Description: I study how the biggest and weirdest stars in the universe evolve and die. \nFunniest thing about space: Astronomers study the most thrilling and mind-bending mysteries in the universe and then we turn around and name our telescopes things like “the Very Large Telescope”\, or decide that if a moon is being orbited by a little moon of its own we should call it a “moonmoon”. \nFavorite Movie: Contact (movie’s good\, book is even better) \nLeast Favorite Movie: Don’t Look Up \n  \nName / Pronouns / Job: James (Jim) Davenport\, he/him. Astronomy professor at the University of Washington \nJob Description: I search for aliens! We look for signs of technology or “intelligent” life in our data from large surveys of the night sky. \nFunniest thing about space: The average color of galaxies in the observable universe is kind of milky white… a color that is now called “cosmic latte” \nFavorite Movie: Apollo 13 and Contact \nLeast Favorite Movie: Currently Armageddon has my ire… except the soundtrack is pure 90’s bliss \n  \nName / Pronouns / Job: Megan Gialluca\, she/her\, PhD Candidate (Graduate Student) \nJob Description: I’m a PhD candidate pursing a dual-title degree in Astronomy & Astrobiology at the University of Washington; my work focuses on modeling and interpreting observations of terrestrial planet atmospheres\, particularly for planets experiencing runaway greenhouses — like Venus! I’m interested in planetary habitability\, the search for life (or “biosignatures”)\, and identifying false positive life detections (things we think could be life\, but aren’t!) \nFunniest thing about space: We sent a mission called Juno\, Jupiter’s wife in roman mythology\, to check up on Jupiter and its moons\, which are named after Jupiter’s mistresses. \nFavorite Movie: The Martian! \nLeast Favorite Movie: Ad Astra \n\n\n\n  \nGet your tickets now!

SUMMARY:Understanding the Temporal and Spatial Cellular Dynamics of Making a Left-Right Organizer
DESCRIPTION:The Hehnly Lab investigates how cellular and intracellular mechanisms establish the Left-Right Organizer (LRO) in vertebrates\, a critical structure for body axis formation. Using zebrafish as a model\, the lab explores how motile and non-motile cilia within the LRO generate fluid flow or potentially sense it\, impacting asymmetric organ development. Open questions include how cells differentiate to form motile versus non-motile cilia and the roles these cilia play in development. Through live imaging\, gene expression profiling\, and cytoskeletal analysis\, the lab aims to reveal spatial and temporal cellular events essential for LRO maturation\, ultimately informing models of ciliated tissue development.

SUMMARY:EGG w/ Sarah Adelman
DESCRIPTION:On Sarah Adelman’s first day working at the sperm bank\, she stares through her microscope into a petri dish full of semen and is shocked by how much the little wiggly sperms remind her of herself—intense\, frantic\, and desperate to be seen. \nIt’s a common misconception that the strongest sperm wins the race to the egg. As a fertility scientist\, Sarah knows better: It’s the egg that chooses the sperm. This fact forces her to examine whether her choices have led her to the life that she actually wants. If she behaved more like the egg\, confident and patient\, rather than like the sperm\, endlessly searching for approval\, could she find a happier life? \nThis is Sarah’s coming-of-age journey through bat mitzvah humiliation\, data-driven dating\, the sperm bank porn library\, and a surprise meeting with her lab’s HR department that would force her to reckon with whether she’s ready to truly become the EGG. \nSarah Adelman is a New York City-born comedian and former reproductive health research scientist. She performs at venues across New York and has appeared on The Today Show and HBO’s Game Theory. Earlier this year\, Sarah was a resident at Ars Nova’s Comedy Artist Makers’ Program\, where she developed and premiered EGG. EGG was an official selection of the New York Comedy Festival. Her short film “BUSTED!” will be released in 2025.

SUMMARY:Allen Institute for Immunology Seminar Series with Dr. Susan Kaech
DESCRIPTION:The Allen Institute for Immunology will be hosting Dr. Susan Kaech on Tuesday\, March 11th\, 2025 at 1pm at the Allen Institute. Susan Kaech is a Salk Institute Professor\, Director of the NOMIS Center for Immunobiology and Microbial Pathogenesis\, and holder of the NOMIS Chair. Prior to this she was a Waldemar Von Zedtwitz Professor at Yale University in the Department of Immunobiology (2004–2018). Dr. Kaech did her postdoctoral work with Dr. Rafi Ahmed at Emory University (1999–2004) and\nreceived her PhD in Developmental Biology at Stanford University. She received her BS in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Washington. Dr. Kaech aims to understand how memory T cells are produced during infection and vaccination\, how they function and why in some particular cases\, they fail to induce long-term immunity. Her lab has been a leader in using genetic and molecular tools to identify the genes and signaling molecules involved in generating two specific types of memory T cells\, CD4 and CD8\, from precursor cells during both acute and chronic viral infections. Her lab has made several notable discoveries in elucidating how and when memory T cells form following infection or vaccination.
