SUMMARY:Illuminating the Dynamics of Tandem Repeat Expansions Using Long-Read Sequencing
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Valdmanis as he discusses how his lab leverages long-read sequencing to uncover the mechanisms driving tandem repeat expansions\, which underlie over 50 neurological disorders. He will also highlight how these approaches are used to identify population-specific repeat expansions undergoing positive selection.\nRegister today for free!\n\nPNRI Science Matters Seminars\nPNRI’s Science Matters free\, virtual seminars feature discussions with scientists around the globe about exciting research in genetics\, genomics\, and evolutionary biology with important societal impact. Topics include research on the genetics of ethnically diverse populations\, diseases afflicting vulnerable or underserved groups\, and efforts to expand the diversity (broadly defined) of research subjects or the scientific workforce. Learn more at: https://pnri.org/events/science-matters/.\nPlease let me know if you have any questions or need more information.

SUMMARY:Developing Open Neuroscience Teaching Tools Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This four day in-person workshop will support educators in developing inquiry-based educational activities (ranging in scale from short single-class activities to CURE courses) that integrate Allen Institute’s open science data into their undergraduate neuroscience courses. \nParticipants will learn about publicly available datasets that require no\, low/medium\, or high coding experience from the Allen Institute. Then participants will work together in groups and use a structured backwards design process to design activities that meet their shared learning objectives. Workshop attendees will additionally work together to design both formative and summative assessments for students\, an assessment plan for measuring the success of the activity and plans for sharing the activity and outcomes. \nApply by February 3\, 2025

SUMMARY:Introduction to Lichen Identification and Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Lichens are symbiotic organisms–fungi living with photosynthesizing partners–that are all around us. Lichens are beautiful\, and they also play critical roles in ecosystems. As small organisms that are sensitive to fine-scale environmental conditions\, lichens can be used as powerful ecological indicators. Once you begin to pay attention to lichens you can hear the stories they’re telling about the world around us. \nThis two-day workshop will focus on developing skills for identifying common Pacific Northwest macrolichens (foliose and fruticose lichens). We will focus on characteristics for field identification as well as characteristics seen through dissecting microscopes in the lab. We will also discuss the use of chemical “spot tests”\, an essential tool for distinguishing similar lichen species\, though we are not allowed to actually use chemicals in our lab space at UW. We will meet from 9 am to 4:30 pm on October 4 and 5. \nStudents will learn to recognize and distinguish between pollution-tolerant lichen communities that we often see in cities and the more pristine communities that occur in places with high air quality. After taking this course you will be sure to observe lichens\, big or small\, almost everywhere you go!

SUMMARY:Preclinical Development and IND Filing for Antibody Therapeutics: the Nuts\, Bolts\, and Best Practices
DESCRIPTION:The investigational new drug application (IND) is an important step to achieve in antibody-based therapeutics\, and understanding the requirements for a successful IND filing is important to ensure fast and efficient development. While the principles and basics are similar across different modalities for an IND filing such as safety studies\, there are important aspects that need to be considered for antibody-based therapeutics. In this workshop\, we will cover the best practices for a successful IND package of an antibody candidate. Our highly experienced speakers will discuss the preclinical studies for antibody-based therapeutics IND packages. \n\nTopics to be covered: \nOverview of preclinical development and IND filing requirements for antibody-based therapeutics \nRequired preclinical studies for: Safety assessment\, Pharmacology\, Pharmacokinetics\, and CMC (Chemistry\, Manufacturing\, Control) \nClinical development plans \nRegulatory strategies and agency interactions \nFDA’s perspective
