SUMMARY:Stand Up for Science 2025
DESCRIPTION:If you are here\, you’ve surely heard about the recent executive orders targeting federal research funding\, which have caused many local and national researchers to be extremely concerned. The orders have immediate consequences for the thousands of people whose livelihoods depend on this funding and drastic long-term consequences for public health and the advancement of science in Washington and the US. \nBecause of this\, a group of early-career scientists came together to participate in the national Stand Up for Science rallies by hosting a local event in Seattle. \nTogether\, across the nation\, we will rally for: \n– Securing and expanding scientific funding \n– Ending censorship and political interference in science \n– Defending diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and accessibility in science \nYou can read more about these policy goals here. \nHelp us get the word out by sharing our flyer\, social media flyer\, and press release. \nPlease join us on Friday March 7th to STAND UP FOR SCIENCE!

SUMMARY:Allen Institute for Immunology Seminar Series with Dr. Susan Kaech
DESCRIPTION:The Allen Institute for Immunology will be hosting Dr. Susan Kaech on Tuesday\, March 11th\, 2025 at 1pm at the Allen Institute. Susan Kaech is a Salk Institute Professor\, Director of the NOMIS Center for Immunobiology and Microbial Pathogenesis\, and holder of the NOMIS Chair. Prior to this she was a Waldemar Von Zedtwitz Professor at Yale University in the Department of Immunobiology (2004–2018). Dr. Kaech did her postdoctoral work with Dr. Rafi Ahmed at Emory University (1999–2004) and\nreceived her PhD in Developmental Biology at Stanford University. She received her BS in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Washington. Dr. Kaech aims to understand how memory T cells are produced during infection and vaccination\, how they function and why in some particular cases\, they fail to induce long-term immunity. Her lab has been a leader in using genetic and molecular tools to identify the genes and signaling molecules involved in generating two specific types of memory T cells\, CD4 and CD8\, from precursor cells during both acute and chronic viral infections. Her lab has made several notable discoveries in elucidating how and when memory T cells form following infection or vaccination. More recently\, her lab has begun exploring how immune cells function in the brain and interact with peripheral nerves in healthy organs and those overcome by cancer. Additionally\, her research examines the potential roles of T cells in Alzheimer’s disease.

SUMMARY:2025 Cell Types Workshop: Describe Your Neurons Like the Allen Institute
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will gain in-depth exposure on how the Allen Institute defines “cell types” and walk away with direct\, applicable examples on using our free\, open tools for their research. Allen Institute for Brain Science has created a treasure trove of data and variety of tools. This workshop will help you navigate these resources and give you example cases to apply them to your work. This review article by our EVP & Director of Allen Institute of Brain Science\, Hongkui Zeng\, explains cell types and how to define them. \nThis workshop is geared toward early-career scientists\, especially graduate students\, postdocs\, research associates\, and data analysts\, who are interested in developing their understanding of cell types and how to refine their research with the techniques taught. However\, faculty and senior scientists are welcome to apply. \nApplications are open now and are due on December 6\, 2024. All applications will be notified of the decision on their application by January 1\, 2025. \nGABAergic\, glutamatergic\, dopaminergic – if this is how you classify your cell types\, this workshop is for you! \nIn this workshop\, participants will gain in-depth exposure on how Allen Institute defines “cell types” and work with direct\, applicable examples of how to use the Allen Institute’s free\, open resources & tools for research. The highlighted tools featured at the workshop are Cell Types Knowledge Explorer and Allen Brain Cell (ABC) Atlas\, both of which include definitions and taxonomies of cell types\, cell properties used in those definitions\, and resources for applying these types to your cells. \nNo prior experience with Allen Institute tools\, methods or techniques is required. We highly encourage non-R1\, translational research\, undergraduate-focused\, and small labs to apply. \nWe will provide up to $1500 in travel & accommodation support for accepted participants. There is no application fee.

SUMMARY:Biotech Networks Speed Networking & Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:We’re back in Seattle at Stoup Brewing in Capitol Hill March 18th 2025. This time we’ll be in the upstairs mezzanine and providing a free workshop from Ellen Kuwana\, MS\, see information below. You’ll be able to improve your science communication skills\, and after the presentation we’ll have our same Scientific Speed Networking activities. We know that these are trying times for scientists\, and being able to write well is an asset in many situations. Click here to register \nNOTE: This event venue is only accessible via a flight of stairs to the mezzanine level of Stoup. We will have food and drinks served on this level\, so you’ll only have to use the stairs a few times. We apologize for the lack of accessibility for this event. \n \nEllen Kuwana\, MS (Bio) Scientific Communications Workshop: Tips\, Common Errors\, and AI Tools for Writing and Editing \nInterested in speeding up literature searches or improving your editing skills? Want to know why not to start a sentence with “There is…” or “This shows…”? This talk will be useful to anyone writing a manuscript or grant proposal\, or researchers who write for the broader public (including patients) or edit other people’s writing. \n  \nThis interactive talk will present: \nCommon errors in scientific writing plus suggestions for fixing them. \nBest practices in plain language and resources where you can practice how to make your text easier to read. \nAI-assisted tools for editing scientific text (e.g.\, making text more concise). \nFeel free to bring a laptop. Send any text you’d like used as sample text for demos to info@ellenkuwana.com and specify if you’d like text made more concise or presented in plain language. All text will be treated as confidential and not put through any software where text is used to train LLMs (i.e.\, generative AI platforms). \nLearning Objectives\nAt the end of this talk\, you will be able to:\n1) Describe a few common errors in writing and how to fix them.\n2) Explain what plain language is and how it helps decrease cognitive load.\n3) Understand the difference between AI-assisted tools and generative AI.
