Other notable books include the solarpunk novels WALKAWAY and THE LOST CAUSE; the tech policy books THE INTERNET CON and CHOKEPOINT CAPITALISM; and the internationally bestselling YA LITTLE BROTHER series; and the picture book POESY THE MONSTER SLAYER. He maintains a daily blog at Pluralistic.net. He works for the Electronic Frontier Foundation\, is an AD White Professor at Cornell University; an MIT Media Lab Research Affiliate; a Visiting Professor of Computer Science at Open University; a Visiting Professor of Practice at the University of North Carolina’s School of Library and Information Science. He co-founded the UK Open Rights Group. Born in Toronto\, Canada\, he now lives in Los Angeles. In 2020\, he was inducted into the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. In 2022\, he earned the Sir Arthur Clarke Imagination in Service to Society Awardee for lifetime achievement. SUMMARY:PNRI Science Matters Seminar: Omic-Driven Precision Care in South Africa
DESCRIPTION:Shahida Moosa\, MBBCh\, PhD of Tygerberg Hospital and Stellenbosch University will discuss the growing role of omics-driven precision care in South Africa\, and how these advances are transforming the landscape of rare disease diagnosis and management across the lifespan. Through the Undiagnosed Disease Programme\, recent work has demonstrated the power of integrating multiple layers of genomic technology: from exome and genome sequencing to long-read platforms and RNA sequencing\, to uncover the molecular basis of rare and previously undiagnosed conditions. In a setting as diverse and complex as South Africa\, where genetic variation is vast and healthcare resources constrained\, these tools do more than generate data: they create answers\, enable tailored care\, and provide long-awaited clarity for families who have spent years on a diagnostic odyssey.  Register today for FREE! \nPNRI Science Matters Seminars \nPNRI’s Science Matters free\, virtual seminars feature discussions with scientists around the globe about exciting research in genetics\, genomics\, and evolutionary biology with important societal impact. Topics include research on the genetics of ethnically diverse populations\, diseases afflicting vulnerable or underserved groups\, and efforts to expand the diversity (broadly defined) of research subjects or the scientific workforce. New classes of metabolites are continuously being unearthed\, accompanied by detailed characterization of their effects on host physiology. In this symposium\, we will hear from leading experts who will present their groundbreaking work on how specific microbial metabolites influence neural\, immune\, and endocrine systems. \nISB is hosting this symposium on December 12\, 2025. The intended audience is graduate students\, postdocs\, principal investigators\, industry scientists\, educators\, clinicians\, or any other variety of microbiome-curious person from across the globe. \nThe speakers include Drs.
