Biotech Networks Speed Networking & Writing Workshop

March 18 - 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

$35 – $85

We’re back in Seattle at Stoup Brewing in Capitol Hill March 18th 2025. This time we’ll be in the upstairs mezzanine and providing a free workshop from Ellen Kuwana, MS, see information below. You’ll be able to improve your science communication skills, and after the presentation we’ll have our same Scientific Speed Networking activities. We know that these are trying times for scientists, and being able to write well is an asset in many situations. Click here to register

NOTE: This event venue is only accessible via a flight of stairs to the mezzanine level of Stoup. We will have food and drinks served on this level, so you’ll only have to use the stairs a few times. We apologize for the lack of accessibility for this event.

Ellen Kuwana, MS (Bio) Scientific Communications Workshop: Tips, Common Errors, and AI Tools for Writing and Editing

Interested in speeding up literature searches or improving your editing skills? Want to know why not to start a sentence with “There is…” or “This shows…”? This talk will be useful to anyone writing a manuscript or grant proposal, or researchers who write for the broader public (including patients) or edit other people’s writing.

This interactive talk will present:

Common errors in scientific writing plus suggestions for fixing them.

Best practices in plain language and resources where you can practice how to make your text easier to read.

AI-assisted tools for editing scientific text (e.g., making text more concise).

Feel free to bring a laptop. Send any text you’d like used as sample text for demos to info@ellenkuwana.com and specify if you’d like text made more concise or presented in plain language. All text will be treated as confidential and not put through any software where text is used to train LLMs (i.e., generative AI platforms).

Learning Objectives
At the end of this talk, you will be able to:
1) Describe a few common errors in writing and how to fix them.
2) Explain what plain language is and how it helps decrease cognitive load.
3) Understand the difference between AI-assisted tools and generative AI.
