Crash Course & Astronomy on Tap Present: Your Guide to the Galaxy

Crash Course: Where Smart Meets Funny is Seattle’s first night-class/comedy-game show mashup that brings in brilliant Seattleites to share their ideas and expertise. Hosted by comedian Marcus Van Valen and scientist Caroline Duncombe, this interactive experience presents informative, wacky, and inspiring topics across all disciplines. After a night of intellectual shenanigans, one burning question will remain: Are you smarter than a comedian?
Showtime:
Doors open at 6:30pm.

Meet the Experts:
Name / Pronouns / Job: Emily Levesque (pronounced “la-VEK”), she/her, astronomy professor at UW
Job Description: I study how the biggest and weirdest stars in the universe evolve and die.
Funniest thing about space: Astronomers study the most thrilling and mind-bending mysteries in the universe and then we turn around and name our telescopes things like “the Very Large Telescope”, or decide that if a moon is being orbited by a little moon of its own we should call it a “moonmoon”.
Favorite Movie: Contact (movie’s good, book is even better)
Least Favorite Movie: Don’t Look Up
Name / Pronouns / Job: James (Jim) Davenport, he/him. Astronomy professor at the University of Washington
Job Description: I search for aliens! We look for signs of technology or “intelligent” life in our data from large surveys of the night sky.
Funniest thing about space: The average color of galaxies in the observable universe is kind of milky white… a color that is now called “cosmic latte”
Favorite Movie: Apollo 13 and Contact
Least Favorite Movie: Currently Armageddon has my ire… except the soundtrack is pure 90’s bliss
Name / Pronouns / Job: Megan Gialluca, she/her, PhD Candidate (Graduate Student)
Job Description: I’m a PhD candidate pursing a dual-title degree in Astronomy & Astrobiology at the University of Washington; my work focuses on modeling and interpreting observations of terrestrial planet atmospheres, particularly for planets experiencing runaway greenhouses — like Venus! I’m interested in planetary habitability, the search for life (or “biosignatures”), and identifying false positive life detections (things we think could be life, but aren’t!)
Funniest thing about space: We sent a mission called Juno, Jupiter’s wife in roman mythology, to check up on Jupiter and its moons, which are named after Jupiter’s mistresses.
Favorite Movie: The Martian!
Least Favorite Movie: Ad Astra
