One Doctor, Two Million Patients: Mental Health Care in Sub-Saharan Africa
September 10, 2019 - 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
In the aftermath of the cyclone that ravaged Mozambique’s Sofala Province in March 2019, one psychiatrist managed the mental health response for over 2 million individuals. Why just one? In Mozambique, a country of 30 million people, there are only 18 psychiatrists. Join the Mozambique Ministry of Health’s Dr. Vasco Cumbe, MD, PhDc and Health Alliance International/UW Global Mental Health expert Dr. Brad Wagenaar, PhD, MPH for a discussion on the historically-rooted yet growing burden of mental health in sub-Saharan Africa and their collaborative work toward an integrated, systems-level mental health care response.
