The Life Science Community Responds to COVID-19: How Machine Learning Creates New Weapons

June 18, 2020 - 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

How Machine Learning Creates New Weapons

COVID-19 represents the most pressing bioscience problem of our time.  Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are proving to be pivotal tools for the rationalization of large biological data sets in the most efficient manner.  Therefore, many high profile collaborations have been announced in recent months that harness the power of Machine Learning to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.  This webinar will explore three of the most prominent efforts:  The ImmuneRACE, the CORD-19 Project, and Blood Profiling for Kawaski’s Disease in Children.

Jonathan M. Carlson, PhD
Senior Director, Microsoft Healthcare

Dr. Jonathan Carlson is the Senior Director of Immunomics in Microsoft’s Healthcare NExT. In partnership with Adaptive Biotechnologies, our goal is transform the way we diagnose, monitor and treat disease by creating a blood test to scan the body for past and present signs of infections, cancers and autoimmune diseases. The basis of our approach is the T-cell Antigen Map: nature’s mapping of your disease-fighting T-cells to antigens, the signals of disease that they target. If we can learn to decode this information, a small blood sample would yield a readout of the antigens your immune system is monitoring, allowing your immune system to tell its own story. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington in Computer Science and has contributed to over 100 peer-reviewed publications.

Douglas Raymond
General Manager, Seismic Study, Allen Institute for AI

Douglas Raymond is the General Manager of CORD-19 and Semantic Scholar, free, AI-powered research tools for scientific literature, based at the non-profit Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence. CORD-19 represents a consortium of tech leaders — including the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, Microsoft and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s charity — meant to give researchers quicker, surer access to resources relating to coronavirus and how to stop it.

Chad Robins
Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder, Adaptive Biotechnologies

Chad Robins co-founded Adaptive Biotechnologies in September 2009 and has served as Chief Executive Officer and a member of our board of directors since incorporation. Prior to co-founding Adaptive, Chad held numerous executive-level positions in medical technology, investment and real estate companies. Chad holds an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a BS in Managerial Economics from Cornell University.

Rhonda Rhyne
President, CEO, Board Director, Prevencio, Inc.

Currently, Ms. Rhyne is President, CEO, and Board Director for Prevencio, Inc., a novel cardiac biomarker company developing Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven, multi-protein in vitro diagnostic and prognostic tests for cardiovascular disease. Prevencio is also in partnerships with Microsoft, Seattle Children’s Hospital (engaged in custom diagnostics for Kawasaki Disease—a disease triggered by COVID-19) as well as a LOI with Bayer.

Karen Tkach Tuzman, PhD
Assoc. Editor & Head, Discovery and Preclinical Research, BioCentury Inc.

As Head of Discovery and Preclinical Research, Karen guides BioCentury’s coverage of emerging biology and technologies. She has written extensively about immunology, synthetic biology and data science, covering innovative breakthroughs in industry and academia, and dissecting trends in company formation and investments around new science. She coordinates activities and interactions with BioCentury’s Scientific Advisory Board.
