yEvo Workshop

December 2, 2023 - 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

This teacher workshop focuses on introducing educators to the innovative concept of yEVO, an experimental evolution project utilizing vibrant pigmented strains of yeast, S. cerevisiae, developed at the Dunham Lab at UW.

The workshop will equip teachers with the knowledge and tools to engage their students in a competition experiment. Students will cultivate yeast with different colors in a drug-free medium before subjecting them to competition in media containing the antifungal drug Azole. Through this hands-on experience, students can determine which yeast strains are best adapted to the antifungal environment by analyzing the color ratios on agar plates after a few days of growth.

More info about the activity can be found on our curriculum page.
