A well-designed logo is a powerful marketing tool. Iconic logos like BP’s sunburst, McDonald’s arches and Nike’s swoosh bring instant brand recognition and engage customers. In science, logos can be used on laboratory websites, personal and lab social-media accounts, presentations and posters, and on lab freebies such as stickers to help groups gain recognition, attract new members and promote their identity. Although the process takes some creative juices, it need not stretch a lab’s budget or take significant time away from research. Nature asks three researchers and a graphic designer for their advice on how to design logos that resonate.
