UW Department of Bioengineering Assistant Professor Patrick M. Boyle will be honored at the 2023 Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) annual meeting as a Young Innovator in Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering.
The Young Innovators award is issued by Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering (CMBE), a journal focused on “research that studies how cellular behavior arises from molecular-level interactions to tackle the challenge of improving human health.” Each year, a group of early-career faculty researchers are recognized for their groundbreaking contributions to the field. Each of the award recipients is required to submit a research paper, which then undergoes a rigorous review process. Boyle’s research will be featured in the special October Young Innovators issue of CMBE. The paper, Optogenetic Modulation of Arrhythmia Triggers: Proof-of-Concept from Computational Modeling, was co-written with lead author Dr. Alexander R. Ochs, who received his Ph.D. in bioengineering from UW while working in Boyle’s CardSS Lab. The study explores how light sensitization of heart cells could someday be harnessed as a novel way to prevent lethal cardiac rhythm disorders.
CMBE is an official BMES journal, and Boyle—along with his fellow award recipients—will present his research during a special Young Innovators session at the 2023 annual meeting.
