In a world of ever-evolving technological advances, UW is engaging in AI development. Professor Su-In Lee from the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering is exploring AI through her research that focuses on the intersection of AI and biomedicine.
Lee conducts her research with a group of 10-15 Ph.D. students, some of whom are a part of UW’s M.D./Ph.D. program. Lee’s research focuses on identifying genes that cause certain diseases, especially diseases that are deadly but have no cure, such as Alzheimer’s and some cancers. Using AI, Lee’s team is working on creating models that are capable of interpreting clinical data.
“Say that you found on your skin some strange potential lesion,” Lee said. “You take a picture of it, you want to know whether that’s melanoma or not, that’s what AI can do. It can predict whether it’s likely to be melanoma or other skin diseases.”
Explainable AI, a system that allows humans to understand how the outputs of AI and machine learning algorithms are created, is also at the forefront of Lee’s research focus.
